Tropical Depression 18 formed in the early hours of Monday off the coast of Africa, where it will bring heavy rains to the Cape Verde Islands before entering the Atlantic.
According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) 5 a.m. bulletin, the system is located 250 miles east-southeast of the Cape Verde Islands.
Tropical Depression 18 has sustained maximum winds of 35 miles per hour, and moves westward at a translation rate of 12 mph.
The center of the system is forecast to pass near or over the Cape Verde Islands on Monday, at which point it could also become a tropical storm.
The system is expected to continue west along the Atlantic.
